Demonstration

Take a dry sponge and a bowl of water. Use the sponge to discuss what happens to our cells (and plants) when we don’t have enough water in our bodies. We dry up. To stay hydrated, we need to drink water so our cells are full.

Activities

Take a seed . (Should we give it milk, juice, or water?)

FYI - This is a helpful link for seeing the process - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzyV5YdgmWI

In front of you, you have two plastic baggies, some seeds, a bowl of water and some paper towel squares. Today we’re going to use these items to do an experiment that demonstrate the importance of water for living things. I want you to prepare your two bags just like I show you. In the first bag, you’re going place a folded paper towel in the bottom and place the seeds on top of it. Seal it up tightly and write the words “No water” on the bag. Now let’s prepare the second bag. Take a second paper towel and dip it in the water bowl. Wring it out so there’s no extra water. Place the paper towel flat in the second bag and lay the seats inside. Fold the paper towel over the seeds. Seal the bag shut, lay it flat and label the bag “Water”. Write your name on both baggies and place them in the window where they will receive direct light. For the next few days, we will watch what happens to the seeds in our bags.

What do you predict is going to happen? Why?

Teachable moment: What we need everyday, especially when tired, sad, and droopy is water!

Water the seed and revisit it during the day and throughout the week allowing the children to care for their seed/sprout/plant. When Revisiting their seed/sprout/plant make sure to discuss what hydration has done for it.
